What is a holistic body?
The human body operates on different planes. We refer to these planes as the physical body, the mind and the soul, or spirit. The physical body is made up of many systems: the cardiovascular system, nervous system, lymph system, fascia and energetic system. One of these systems, the energy system, connects to and influences all planes – body, mind and soul.
For thousands of years, the eastern world based their medicine on this simple understanding. It wasn't until the early 1600s, when Rene Descartes, a prominent philosopher who wanted to experiment on cadavers and was being condemned by the Catholic Church, offered a separation of body, mind and soul – giving the body to physicians, the mind to philosophers and the soul to the domain of the church. This Cartesian Dualism theory became the basis for what we refer to as Western or Modern Medicine.
So, for the past 400 years, we lost the appreciation that all our systems are interconnected and dependent on each other. Even modern medicine is slowly beginning to see the importance of this holistic approach to medicine. They refer to this as integrative medicine. Integrative medicine supports conventional modern medical techniques but integrates into that treatment other techniques like energy medicine, acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathic, aromatherapy, qigong, herbal and nutritional.
